The following is a discussion of a few stock trading strategies. The best investment tool to screen out stocks that match these strategies is ChartSmart. You can download or request a free ChartSmart CD and take a 1 month free trial.
In all of the examples below we give 5 sample charts taken from a ChartSmart screen which match the specifications of the strategy. In addition we give details at the bottom of the 5 charts on the settings used so you can screen similar lists on a daily basis with ChartSmart. You can also click on VIDEO under INVESTOR LEARNING CENTRE on the left to play the video of the strategy. These videos are also found on the Video Tutorials section of our web page.
The following trading strategies in no way represent suggestions or recommendations on how to trade and the provider is in no way responsible for their use.
Examples of Trading Strategies:
1) Channel Breakouts based on a 20 day Bollinger Band (ADV).
Often it is difficult to find stocks before a significant breakout. Bollinger Band Breakouts are one of the best ways to catch stock breakouts immediately as they occur. When you view these chart samples you will see how useful this filter is.
2) Channel Breakdowns based on a 10 day Bollinger Band (ADV).
Bollinger Bands can catch stock breakdowns before they occur. In this example, we specify that the price is nearly touching the bottom Bollinger Band. By also specifying the stocks are near year highs these stocks may be ready to roll over and represent short opportunities.
3) CDNX Stocks doing Financings at Low Prices (ADV).
Often company insiders issue stock to themselves in the form of options and private placements when stock prices are at relative lows. ChartSmart can screen these out for you and it is especially useful to combine this screen with other ones so as to include stocks with relatively low prices (ex. penny stocks $.10 to $.30) trading near year lows.
4) MACD Crossovers up - 12 day through the 25 day EMA (ADV).
The MACD line is the difference between 2 exponential moving average lines on a chart. When the short term EMA crosses upward through the long term EMA (the MACD is zero) this is often considered a point where the momentum of the stock may be showing a significant change in direction upward.
5) Stocks at 52 week lows showing weakness (ADV) .
Often it is tempting to only look at stocks that are on an uptrend but one of the problems is determining if the uptrend is near an end. Another approach is looking at stocks that are at an all time low and taking showing weakness can be very profitable if you can spot these stocks before they trend upward again.
6) CDNX stocks at lows, consolidated, and cheap (ADV).
Often investors simply want to find cheap stocks on the CDNX and wait for large percentage gains. This filter shows how to do this and other filters you can include that might assist in minimizing the risk of selecting a stock that might be consolidated or delisted.
7) New Listings on Cdn Exchanges trading at lows (ADV).
Unlike any other software tool, ChartSmart will allow you to screen out new stock listings. This example takes one possible approach looking at new listings that are trading at all time lows as possible buy opportunities.
8) Stocks with Splits in the last 3 months and strong (ADV).
Stock Splits are an important event which can have different meaning to investors. In most cases they are considered a positive action by the company. ChartSmart enables you to filter out stocks with stock splits in seconds in conjunction with other filter criteria as well.
9) Stocks in specific band within a Bollinger (ADV).
This example shows how one is not just restricted to selecting stocks where their last price traded is above the upper or below the lower Bollinger Bands. With ChartSmart one can screen out all stocks with their last price trading within any area between or outside of Bollinger Bands.
10) High Short Term Price Volatility Stocks (ADV).
For day traders this is an interesting example. This screens out all stocks that have shown price volatility of over 20% of the close for the last 3 days in a row. Day traders often look for high price volatility stocks and watch them on a daily basis. This is one quick way of finding them.
11) ST Price Crashes but forming a Support Channel (ADV).
This example screens out stocks that have had a rapid decline over a relatively SHORT period of about 15 days but they have also established some price support or a channel over about 5 days. They have not yet shown an upward trend yet.
12) LT Price Crashes but forming a Support Channel (ADV).
This example screens out stocks that have had a rapid decline over a relatively LONG period of about 50 days but they have also established some price support or a channel over about 15 days. They have not yet shown an upward trend yet.
13) Up 3 days in a row, near a 52 week low (ADV).
This example helps screen out stocks that display the traditional bowl pattern that a stock makes after a large price decline. That is the price drops, then there is a slight increase in price creating what appears to be a saucer or bowl at the bottom of the chart.
14) Stochastics Trending Downward from High (ADV).
This example uses the ChartSmart Stochastics filters to find stocks that may be overbought and
ready to have a price correction downwards. ChartSmart allows one not only to specify that the
fast or slow stochastic is greater that for example 80, but it also allows one to specify that
the fast stochastic is below the slow stochastic by a prespecified percentage (or visa versa).
Other Comments about Trading and ChartSmart:
The preceding examples have illustrated some interesting approaches to trading but they are only a fraction of the possibilities you are capable of with ChartSmart. If you have any specific suggestions on strategies or screens please email us at info@chartsmart.com. We will be adding new ideas to this web page so you may wish to review it periodically.

The above are only a few of the many criteria available for developing further trading strategies. Furthermore, ChartSmart has the capability of allowing you to create your own formulas. For example, to specify that the trading volume today is twice the trading volume yesterday one would specify: #volume#÷1000=2 x #v1#
