Channel Breakdowns based on a 10 day Bollinger Band

Chart Smart This example gives stock charts that show the last trading price just nearly crossing down through the lower 10 day Bollinger Band. When viewing the charts, look carefully at the last few days of trading and how the price is near or below the lower Bollinger Band. This is an excellent screening criteria to quickly find stocks that are showing breakdowns from an established price trend. ChartSmart allows you to screen out stocks breaking above the upper band or below the lower band. One can actually specify where the stock price must be within the bands as well as above and below the bands. The value of this example is we can filter out stocks that have not actually yet hit the lower band but they are possibly getting close.

In this case the last price traded is set to be at least 80% below the upper band. In order to better understand this assume the distance between the upper and lower bands is 100%. Then to be over 80% from the upper band would mean the current trading price is not much over the lower band or it could be anywhere lower than the lower band. In fact the price cannot be any more than 20% above the lower band.

How to Screen Out these Stocks with ChartSmart

Chart Smart In this case the last price traded is set to be at least 80% below the upper band. In order to better understand this assume the distance between the upper and lower bands is 100%. Then to be over 80% from the upper band would mean the current trading price is not much over the lower band or it could be anywhere lower than the lower band. In fact the price cannot be any more than 20% above the lower band.

Another criteria used in this set is that the stock must be trading within 30% of its year high possibly meaning it is getting near to rolling over from a peak of a cycle. The stocks specified in this case are for the American, New York and Nasdaq Exchanges. When we first ran this filter list we got about 60 stocks. Be sure when you view the charts to turn on the 10 day Bollinger Band indicator.

After you have clicked on RUN FILTERED LIST and created your filter list, close the Filter Menu and go to the Charting Menu. Next click on the GRP button and then use the FORW button and BACK button to scroll through the charts in your filtered list.
